Hudson, NC- Mr. Earl James Witherspoon, of Hudson, went to be with the Lord on his 90th birthday, April 4, 2012 and one day before he and his wife Bernice Haas Witherspoon would have celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Clyde and Bland Witherspoon and two sisters, Jewel Hartley and Helen Triplett. Mr. Witherspoon was a member of Poovey’s Chapel Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. In addition to farming, he retired from Burlington Industries and Kholer & Campbell Piano Company. Surviving other than his wife are two daughters, Patsy Harrison and husband Melvin of Lenoir; Lynn Austin and husband Clark of Lenoir; one son, Jerry Witherspoon and wife of Betty of Granite Falls; 8 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. A celebration of Mr. Witherspoon’s life will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Poovey’s Chapel Baptist Church with Reverend Nicky Waters officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 2:00 until 3:00 PM, one hour prior to the service at Poovey’s Chapel Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be: Tony Ayers, Scott Winebarger, Zackary Smith, William Barlow, Chris Pitts and Kevin Pitts. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Jeff Parham, Davie Edwards, Steve Pitts, David Smith, Terry Harmon, Franklin Haas & Cecil Setzer.
