Earl Robert Spencer

Earl Robert Spencer, age 76, went home to be with the Lord on June 5, 2018, surrounded by his family and where he was reunited with his wife Judy.He was born on October 16,1941 in Buncombe County to Fred Spencer and Artie Hall Spencer.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Judy Spencer, and his brother, Frederick Keith Spencer. He is survived by his three sons, Kelly (Connie) Spencer, Cameron (Karen) Spencer of Lenoir, and Tracy (Stephanie) Spencer of the home.Sister, Mary Lou (Ray) Vance of Collettsville; Grandchildren:Kyle Adams, Brandon Spencer, Dakota Spencer, Jacob Spencer and Molly Spencer, all of Lenoir and one great grandson, Easton Spencer of Lenoir.He was lovingly known to his grandchildren as “Poppie”.He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends. He was a 1960 graduate of Collettsville School, where he was voted “Most Wittiest.”After graduation, he became an entrepreneur with his first endeavor as a jukebox operator.In 1962, he opened one of the first record shops in Lenoir, The Record Den.It was the happening place for all the youth in Caldwell County.During that same time, he established a venue called, “The Hungry Ear”, which brought many well known bands to the area.Some of those bands included, Harry Deal & The Galaxies, BB King, Gladys Knight & The Pips, and many more. Later he moved to Charlotte, NC where he was offered a position at Bibbs Distributing as the Distribution Manager for the Southeast.Following that position, he moved to Georgia, where he became the Southeast Sales Manager.After seven years, he moved back to Lenoir, and established Dixie Novelty & Billiards, Inc., where he loved working with his family until retirement.During his retirement, he spent time at his cabin on Johns River, working with his horses, and extending generosity to his family, friends, and neighbors. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 5:30 pm at First Baptist Church of Lenoir conducted by Reverend Nicky Waters.The family will receive friends following the service in the sanctuary. The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care for the support to Earl at home, as well as his nurse, Tiffany West and his Social Worker, Kathy Massing.We would also like to express gratitude to the staff at Caldwell UNC Healthcare, Whitney Rosenbalm, RN and Georgette, RN for the wonderful care given to Earl.
