Dorothy Virginia Peters Whittington, 98, of Lenoir, passed away Monday, March 13, 2017, at LenoirLiving Center, following a period of declining health. She was born June 20,1918, in Roanoke, Virginia to Joel T. and Dollie Crowder Peters. She was a 1936 graduate of Dania High School, Dania, Florida. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Cicero E. Whittington of Lenoir, and her brother, Alva K. Peters, of Dania, Florida. Mrs. Whittington was a very creative individual, working in crochet, knitting, and sewing. She was active in the Baton School PTA and served as its President in 1966-67. She was a 4-H Club leader for 20 years in the North Catawba Club. She was an active member of Ambassador Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, and worked in the John and Romans Ministry. She loved flowers and gardening. Mrs. Whittington is survived by two daughters: Nola (Charles) Soots, and Sheri (Waitsel) Beard, both of Lenoir; two sons: Dale Whittington, and Denis Whittington, both of Lenoir; five grandchildren: Felicia McCall, Alison Hall, Joshua Beard, Joy Kemp, and Joseph Beard, all of Lenoir; and five great-grandchildren: Bryan McCall, of Raleigh, NC, and Dustin McCall of Lenoir; Zoey Hall, Macie Kemp, and Maddix Kemp, all of Lenoir; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted at 4:30 PM on Friday, March 17, at Ambassador Baptist Church with Reverend Robert Setzer officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will, receive friends from 3:30 until 4:30 prior to the service. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the John and Romans Ministry of Ambassador Baptist Church.
