Rev. Dr. Dewey “Butch†Bowen joined his Lord and Savior on Oct. 5th, 2012 at 67 years of age in Charlotte, NC. Dewey was born in Roanook, Alabama on January 28, 1945. He was one of eight siblings born to Margaret and Reese Bowen. Dewey attended Troup County High School and received a BA in Social Studies at Berry College in Rome, GA. Berry is where he met his beautiful bride and sweetheart of 44 years, Theodora Nichols. After graduation and later marriage, Dewey taught History at Brooks County Schools and then decided to go to seminary. He attended Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA where he received his Master of Divinity and later his Doctor of Ministry with McCormick Theological Seminary. Dewey pastored six churches during his ministry: Lemira Presbyterian Church (Sumter, SC), First Presbyterian Church (Fitzgerald, GA), Rowan Presbyterian Church (Lugoff, SC), South Aiken Presbyterian Church (Aiken, SC), First Presbyterian Church (Lufkin, TX), and First Presbyterian Church (Hinton, WV). Not only was Dewey a minister to his congregation, but he ministered through his generous and humble spirit to everyone he met. Dewey was a survivor receiving both a heart (1999) and kidney (2005) transplant. He was a man of laughter and joy and wit. He was a man blessed with the gift of wisdom and faith which he used to guide his children. Dewey was a man that knew love and patience and practiced them daily. He was a beautiful and kind spirit. Any one who knew him was blessed. He loved his family and they all adored him. Dewey is survived by his beloved wife Theodora Lee Bowen, his two daughters: Jennifer Lee Hopson and her husband Neal David Hopson and Christa Kate Olds and her husband Duane Pete Olds, his four grandchildren: Tarah Rylie Olds, Savannah Lee Hopson, Luke Miller Hopson and Katelyn Reece Olds. Dewey is also survived by his siblings: Billy Bowen, Reece C. Bowen Jr., Betty Adams, Jerome Bowen, Babe Bowen, and Gregory Bowen. Dewey is preceded in death by his parents Margarett and Reese Bowen and his brothers Raymond Bowen and Gene Bowen. A Memorial Service for Rev. Dr. Dewey Bowen will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13th at 3pm at Fairview Presbyterian Church in Lenoir, NC. In lieu of flowers, in the remembrance of Dewey’s generous spirit the family request donations to a favorite charity or church of your choice in Dewey’s memory.
