Lenoir, NC- Mr. Devan ?Heavyweight? Paul LaPrade, age 29, of Cardwell Place, died Monday, October 16, 2006 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. Born October 28, 1976 in Englewood, CO, Mr. LaPrade was the husband of Amanda Quinn LaPrade. Devan graduated from West Caldwell High School in 1994. While there, he was a member of The Fellowship of Christian Athletes for 3 years, ROTC for 4 years and S.A.D.D. (Students Against Drunk Driving). Devan also lettered in football all 4 years, wrestling, all four years and track. He won numerous wrestling tournaments in his weight division including ?The Jamie Tuttle?, ?The Warhorse? and was Western Regional Heavyweight Champion in 1994 moving on to state competition the same year. Devan was recruited by Lenoir Rhyne, Appalachian and VMI for his football abilities. He received a Senatorial Nomination and a scholarship to the Merchant Marine Academy in New York but decided on another path. He served in the U.S. Army in the infantry and as a paratrooper and was a truck driver for Zenith Freight Lines of Conover. Surviving other than his wife are his four children, Andrea, McKenzie, Logan and J.T. LaPrade; his mother and step-father, Toni and Jon Holland of Lenoir; his father, Steve LaPrade of Westminster, Maryland; one brother, Jacob LaPrade and wife Amy of Montezuma, NC, one step-sister, Charlotte Griffith and husband Allen of Charlotte; his Maternal Grandparents, Devoy and Dorothy Coble of Graham, NC; his Paternal Grandmother, Carrie LaPrade of Whissett, NC; his Maternal Step-Grandmother, Lois Holland of Lenoir, one niece Gracie Griffith of Charlotte and one nephew, Garrett LaPrade of Montezuma. A celebration of Devan?s life will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, October 21, 2006 at Fleming?s Chapel Baptist Church with Reverend Hugh Whitfield officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday, from 2 until 3 PM, one hour prior to the service. Pallbearers will be: Jack Blankenship, Jimmy Caudle, Kevin Quarles, Larry Sipe, Israel Triplett and Joel West. Honorary Pallbearers will be Zenith Freight Lines and Newton Transportation. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials being made to LaPrade Children, c/o Amanda LaPrade, 3496 Cardwell Place, Lenoir, NC 28645.
