The gates of Heaven opened up on the afternoon of April 13, 2025, as David Wayne Weaver peacefully made his journey from here into the loving arms of Jesus.
David was born at home in Rhodhiss, NC on April 2, 1943 to the late Ruth O’Neil McCall Weaver and Lester Madison Weaver. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, John Lester Weaver, Sr.
From 1962-1966, David served in the United States Air Force in Washington, DC. While in the Honor Guard, he served in many ceremonies but was especially honored to stand guard at the corner of President John F. Kennedy’s casket in the Capitol’s Rotunda.
He was always a person who served others, first as a member of the Prince George’s County Maryland Police Department for 13 years and then the North Carolina Department of Correction from which he retired. He found prior work as a chimney sweep an interesting venture.
David’s love for children was evident as he coached soccer teams in Lenoir and basketball teams for the Gamewell Optimist Club. Whenever his own children had games, he was there. David was also a past President of the Gamewell Ruritan Club.
Years of family camping was a highlight of his life. Eventually putting his own place at Holden Beach, fishing and relaxing became his “Camp David”.
A member of Hartland Baptist Church for 34 years, David served as Deacon and was on several committees. He loved his church and Sunday School Class. He was currently a member of Nebo Crossing Church in Marion, NC.
Attending work weeks at Ft. Caswell through the Caldwell Baptist Association was his mission field.
Those who knew David, knew he was a man of integrity who had a love for his country. Watching FOX News was his passion, along with Westerns (John Wayne), to the History and Discovery Channels.
When he prayed, he would always ask Got to remind each of us to think about making this world “a little better place,” and that he did by supporting the needs of the hungry through Manna Food Bank.
David leaves behind those he loved dearly: his wife, Betty, of 58 years, children: Mike Weaver (Kathy) of Winston-Salem, NC, Leslie Baird (Eddie) of Marion, NC, and Matt Weaver (Amy) of Waxhaw, NC. He adored his six grandchildren who were his pride and joy: Kyndall Weaver, Aubrey Weaver, Chase Baird, Seth Baird, Sam Weaver and Georgia Weaver. He held a special place in his heart for his sister, Rachel “Ginger” Bley of Dudley Shoals and her daughters, Katie and Lizzy, and also for his other nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Celebration of David’s life will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Hartland Baptist Church with Pastor Todd Smith officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
The family would like to thank the Charles George VA in Asheville for their care of David over the years, and more recently to Autumn Care of Marion, Frye Hospital in Hickory, and North Greenville LTAC of Traveler’s Rest, S.C.
Memorials may be sent to Hartland Baptist Church, 3730 Hartland Rd, Morganton, NC 28655, or Manna Food Bank, 99 Broadpointe Dr, Mills River, NC 28759-4638.
Military honors conducted by the United States Air Force and Caldwell County Honor Guard.
