Professor David Finley Moore, was born in Lenoir NC on January 6, 1939 and died on December 19, 2016. He leaves behind five first cousins. He was the son of Gail Phillips Moore, teacher, housewife and watercolor artist, and D. Frank Moore, teacher and regional sales manager for Broyhill Furniture. Professor Moore was an English instructor overseas, a Foreign Service Officer, and a college professor who retired after teaching English and Social Sciences for twenty years at Southern Community College in West Virginia. Professor Moore graduated from Harvard College in 1961, having majored in Government, was awarded the title of Harvard College Scholar, receiving a B. A. Cum Laude. Afterwards he enrolled in the American University of Beirut (Lebanon), graduating in 1965 with an M.A. in Arab Studies. He later studied for a Ph.D. in Linguistics at University of North Carolina. In 1965 he entered the US Department of State, served at embassies in London and Saigon, trained at the Foreign Service Institute, and worked in New York City. After leaving diplomacy, he taught English and other subjects in Iran and Saudi Arabia. Professor Moore also taught part-time at Caldwell Community College before leaving for West Virginia. He specialized in Appalachian Literature and Middle East Studies, giving speeches and leading workshops. He was an active senior leader in the Unitarian-Universalist Association and attended the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Caldwell County.
