David Theodore Herman, Jr. of Lenoir, NC slipped away to be with his Heavenly Father on September 13th, 2024 at the age of 84 following a lengthy journey with dementia. David was so very beloved by family and friends. He was a man of principle who would give you the shirt off his. David (Junior, DT, Dave, Dad, Pop) was born and raised on Springs Road in Hickory, NC. He attended the St. Stephens Lutheran Day School while spending free time watching dirt track car races, earning his Eagle Scout and working at the family pool in Kool Park. After progressing to St. Stephens High School, he played on the inaugural football team, while serving as both Class President and resident prankster.
Immediately following graduation, David married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Propst. Following years in the printing business, he returned to school earning his degree in Accounting from UNC- Charlotte. David’s career took him from Ernst & Ernest to the furniture industry working in Finance for Hammary Furniture and Burris Industries. His perfectionism, slow attention to detail and love of numbers brought him back to his roots opening an accounting office in his childhood home. He loved working as a CPA, Wealth Advisor and thorn in the side of the IRS.
David spent his free time happily heads down in a puzzle, hiking with his grandkids, or slicing his way through 18 holes. He remains family champ as the only golfer with a Hole-In-One. David was wickedly smart, believing there was no problem he couldn’t fix or challenge he couldn’t conquer. David’s best evenings ended with a cigar on the front porch with some of his favorite people. David laughed and loved big.
He leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Sharon, and his three children with their families, Angie and Kerry Hartley, Jeff and Cricket Herman, and Ashley and Mike Reams. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Kris and Julie, Korey, Kourtney and Brian, Sienna, Tilden, Leighton, Knox, Noah, Salem, and Carson. David was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Herman, and his beloved siblings, Betty Lou Sigler, Valeria Anderson and Alden Herman.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in David’s memory to his home church, St. Stephens Lutheran in Lenoir or Amorem/Hospice.
