Constance (Connie) Smith Vermillion, age 84, died September 1, 2021 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.Born December 2, 1936 in Durham, NC, she was the daughter of the late Clarence J. Smith and Mary Campbell Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Martin (Marty) Vermilion and one son, Steven Barry Vermillion. She was a 1955 graduate of Lenoir High School, after which she moved to Washington, DC to work with the Navy Department.She later met and married Marty Vermillion while on a bowling team at the Pentagon. Later she and Marty and one child left Washington, DC and made their home in the Lower Creek area. Connie worked many years at the law firm of Townsend, Todd and Vanderbloemen and also Michael Baumberger. After her final retirement with Helping Hands Clinic she spent several years working part time with Abigail’s Gifts and Florist. Connie was a member of Colliers United Methodist Church where she served in numerous capacities. Connie enjoyed working outside with flowers, camping and square dancing with the Foothill Squares. She is survived by two sons, Greg Vermillion (Carolyn) of Lenoir and Carson Vermillion (Julie) of Johnson City, TN.She is survived by three grandsons, Grayson, Brady, and Aiden of Johnson City, sister-in-law, Pauline Smith of Hudson, NC, and sister-in-law, Pamela Vermillion of Mechanicsville, MD. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 4th 2021 at 3:00 pm at Colliers UM Church conducted the Rev. Lori Anne Bowen and Rev. Adam Love with receivingheld from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm.Interment at Colliers United Methodist Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Colliers United Methodist Church, 2625 Clarks Chapel Road, Lenoir, NC 28645.
