Clarence Rhodes

Clarence Stevenson Rhodes passed away peacefully at Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care in Hudson on January 21, 2019. Born in Collettsville on October 4, 1929, Mr. Rhodes was the son of Summie Rhodes and Amanda Rader Rhodes. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters Dewey Rhodes, Bynum Rhodes, Summie Rhodes, Maggie Setzer, Mary Hart, and Georgia Crump. Mr. Rhodes’ survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mary Ellen Enloe Rhodes, and two children, Duane Rhodes and Debbie Rhodes (Bob) Blake. He had six grandchildren, Traci Rhodes Waters, Jeremy Rhodes, Joshua Austin, Casey Austin, Dustin Rhodes, and Jon Rhodes, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Rhodes was a generous and kind-hearted man who enjoyed helping his family and friends. He was in the construction business and residential rental business for many years before his retirement. Upon retiring, he and his wife lived on the Cherokee Indian Reservation when they were not in Caldwell county. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church in Cherokee and enjoyed the time he spent with his church family singing to residents of nursing homes. While he was in Cherokee, he spent countless hours trout fishing and enjoyed sharing his daily catch with others. When Mr. Rhodes was at his home in Caldwell county, nothing pleased him more than family get-togethers where he expected everyone to be in attendance. He also enjoyed visits from his special friends, Roy Barnwell, Clarence Beane, and Wayne Bolick, nieces, Cindy Cox and Lynda Vitsyn, and brother-in-law, Harold Enloe. Services for Mr. Rhodes will be at Poovey’s Chapel Baptist Church in Hudson on Thursday, January 24. The family will receive friends at 2:30 and the service will be at 3:30. Pastors Nicky Waters and Bobby Pritchard will conduct the service. Mr. Rhodes will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be grandsons Jeremy Rhodes, Joshua Austin, Casey Austin, Jon Rhodes, Isaac Waters, and Nicky Waters. Memorial donations in honor of Mr. Rhodes may be made to Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, NC28645.
