Darby, NC- Mr. Carroll Moore Woods, age 89, of Darby, died Wednesday, March 5, 2009 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.  Born October 6, 1919 in Wilkes County, Mr. Woods was a son of the late James Thornton and Rosa Shell Woods and the husband of Betty Ernest Woods of the home, to whom he was married for 64 years. Mr. Woods was a U.S. Army veteran where he received two purple hearts and numerous combat medals at the Battle of Normandy Beach. He was a member of Rock Spring Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and was a Sunday school teacher. Mr. Woods coached softball and basketball for many years. He touched so many throughout his lifetime. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Tommy Woods, and 2 sisters, Vera Woods, Mamie Triplett and 5 brothers, J.V. Woods, Clarence Woods, Raby Woods, Arlen Woods and Arnie Woods. Surviving him other than his wife, is one son, Joseph Woods and wife Suzy of Blythe, CA; two daughters, Sara Woods of Black Mountain and Susan Brindle and husband Larry of Millers Creek. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, Krista, Jacob, Justin, Marcus, Marissa and Michaela and one great-grandchild, Riley. A celebration of Mr. Woods? life will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, March 8, 2009 at Rock Spring Baptist Church with Reverend Roy Kanupp and Reverend Ron Burgett. Military honors will be presented. A private burial will take place in the Woods Family Cemetery.
