Carroll M. Cloer

Lenoir,NC- Mr. Carroll M. Cloer, 84 of Lenoir, died on April 14, 2010 at Lenoir HealthCare Center. Carroll was born in Patterson, NC on January 29, 1926, the only son of the late Carl E. Cloer and Nancy H. Cloer. Carroll is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rachel Tuttle Cloer. He is also survived by three sisters; Mrs. Fred (Opal) Bryant of Davidson, NC, Faye Mullis of Huntersville, NC and Freida Phillips of Lenoir. Survivors also include four nephews, one niece, two great-nieces and three great-nephews. He attended Happy Valley High School from 1931 to 1942 and graduated from the 11th grade in May 1942. He attended 12th grade at Lenoir High School and graduated in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force Aviation Cadet Program in January 1944 and was sworn in the USAF as a Private on January 25, 1944. He began active duty March 17, 1944. After basic training, he was assigned to gunnery school. After completing training, he was assigned to a bomber crew as Top Turret Gunner and served in the Pacific with the 13th Air Force. He flew his first combat mission 5 days after his 19th birthday. He had earned several medals when he was honorably discharged from the military in 1945. After his military service, Carroll attended NC State University. While there, he was a member of the ROTC and later served in the USAF Reserve. After a total military career spanning 39 years, he retired as a major. He graduated from NCSU with a degree in Textile Engineering and Worked at BeaunitFibers, Elizabethton, TN and Burlington Industries, Rhodhiss, NC. He was employed at the Firestone Company in Gastonia, NC for 22 years before retiring in 1994. He taught at Danville Textile School, Danville, VA, and also night classes at Belmont Textiles, Belmont, NC. Carroll was a member of Crestview Baptist Church. He was also a member of Mensa and his hobbies were traveling and flower gardening. After retirement, he and Rachel lived in Blowing Rock, NC a number of years before returning to Lenoir. A funeral service will be held Friday, April 16, 12:00 noon at Crest View Baptist Church in Lenoir. Visitation will be from 11:00 until 12:00 at the church. Internmet will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock, NC following the service with military rites. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Crest View Baptist Church Building Fund, 1908 Blowing Rock Blvd., Lenoir, NC 28645, or Caldwell Hospice, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, NC 28645.
