Carolyn Gragg Poteat

Carolyn Gragg Poteat, age 87 of Lenoir NC passed away peacefully May 28, 2023 at Shaire Center after a period of declining health. Carolyn was born September 28,1935 to the late Windom Gragg and Vinie Coffey Gragg in Avery County.

Carolyn was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Whitnel. She retired from NAACO after many years of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dewey Poteat and siblings Omie Coffey, Mildred Ivey, Thelma Caldwell, Ruby Crisp, and Nelda Greene.

Survivors include her son, Jackie Clark and wife Cathy, and her daughter, Teresa Pennington and husband, Randy; Her beloved grandchildren Brandon Pennington, Tyler Pennington, Landon Clark, and Kristen Clark Craig and great-granddaughters Marilyne Ava Pennington and Marci Rose Craig. Surviving siblings are Gene Gragg, Janice Smith, and Ruth Houston; she is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Carolyn and her late husband, Dewey, enjoyed traveling and touring New Zealand, Hawaii and Switzerland, just to name a few of the many places. She looked forward to beach trips with family and grandchildren every summer.

Carolyn was a fantastic cook, avid gardener, and the BEST MawMaw ever! She never missed a ballgame, special occasion, or birthdays. Family and friends always looked forward to receiving their favorite homemade cake on a special occasion. Every holiday was a day that she could celebrate with her grandchildren. They were the light of her life!

A graveside celebration of Carolyn’s life will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Orchard Drive, Lenoir, NC, with Pastor Steve Hedgecock and Pastor Stuart White officiating. In lieu of flowers you may make a contribution to St. Judes Childrens Hospital or Alzheimer’s Research Foundation.
