Lenoir, NC- Mrs. Burlene V. Hammer Arnette, 86, of Lenoir was called home to be with the Lord on February 12, 2009. She was a beloved sister, mother, grandmaw, great-grandmaw, aunt, cousin and friend. She was the youngest daughter of John Tilden Hammer and Martha Ann Clary Hammer. Burlene was born, raised and attended school in Alexander County. She later moved to Lenoir to make a home with her husband, Louis E. Arnette. She worked in manufacturing until 1981 when she retired to be a full-time grandmaw. Burlene had a wonderful sense of humor and spent her time loving her kitties and her family. She showered us with unconditional love which will continue to shine on in our hearts and lives. She will be dearly missed. In addition to her parents and husband, Burlene was preceded in death by six brothers, Marsh, Rob, Arthur, Dan, Flake, and Ozelle Hammer all of Stony Point, NC; four sisters, Mae Hammer Carson of Danville, VA, Addie Bell Hammer Dishman of Greensboro, NC, Pearl Hammer Ellis of Stony Point, NC, and Ella Hammer who died as an infant. Survivors include one daughter, Ann Arnette Gragg and her husband Gregory Gragg of Lenoir; one sister Mary Sue Hammer Icenhour of Taylorsville; One granddaughter, Teanne Gragg of Lenoir; One Grandson, Dustin Gragg, currently attending college in Greensboro; Two great-grandchildren, Gwenivere Greene and Macon Greene, who were the lights of her life; she was also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorials can be made to the Caldwell county Humane Society in Burlene?s Honor. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2009 at 2:30 PM at the Liberty Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Dewey Bristol. Interment will follow the service at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Evans Funeral Service on Saturday, February 14, 2009 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
