Lenoir, NC- Mrs. Barbara Dawn Croker Spainhour, age 93, of Lenoir, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2012 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir. Born February 27, 1919 in Caldwell County, Mrs. Spainhour was the daughter of the late Henry Fletcher and Eula Mae Harless Croker and the wife of the late Jack Bryan Spainhour, Sr. to whom she was married for over 70 years. Other than her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by numerous aunts and uncles. Mrs. Spainhour was a member of First Baptist Church where she taught Sunbeams and Training Union. She had served as secretary for First Baptist Church and a local attorney. She was a nurse at Caldwell Memorial Hospital and a nurse for Dr. Troutman, Dr. Hamer, Dr. Segars, Dr. Rogers and Dr. Griffin. Barbara was a graduate of Lenoir High School; a member of the marching band where she played percussion and was Homecoming Queen. She was also a graduate of Salem College. She was an accomplished ballet and tap dancer. She was a lifetime member of the Lenoir Service League. She is survived by her children, Dr. Jack B. Spainhour, Jr. and wife Libby of Danville, VA; Randolph F. Spainhour and wife Sally of Burgaw; Dawn S. Neely and husband Lawton of Jonesville, SC; Diane S. Moore and husband Rob of Lenoir; Daphne S. Friday and husband Steve of Gastonia; Debbie Spainhour of Suffolk, VA; 14 grandchildren, Stephanie, Rebecca, Jay, Lindsay, Adam, Joseph, Tara, Annah, Mamie, Sarah, Bryan, Ashley, John, Jake and 21 great-grandchildren. A celebration of Mrs. Spainhour’s life will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at First Baptist Church in Lenoir with Dr. David Smith and Dr. M.O. Owens officiating. Burial will follow in Belleview Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 7:30 PM at Evans Funeral Service in Lenoir. Pallbearers will be Mrs. Spainhour’s grandsons, Bryan Ledbetter, Jay Spainhour, Adam Spainhour, Joseph Spainhour, John Ledbetter and Jake Friday. A special “Thank You†goes to the caregivers, Dolly Hinson, Jennifer Hollifield, Tina McQueen and Esther Clement. Also, a special “Thanks†to Kim Charlton, all of the Caldwell Hospice Staff for their tender care and compassion and to our dear lifelong friend of the family, Gladys Ferguson.
